Is Grade 12 English a Necessary Prerequisite for University Programs?

I took some time thinking about this question, and pondering about what English is and why it is important. When I hear English I think about reading novels and writing essays and wonder why is any of the information I learn is necessary. However, when I dig a little deeper I realize that it isn't about the actual project I am doing; it is about the skills I am learning from those projects. English is necessary because it improves analysis skills, speed of thinking and many other qualitative skills.

In university programs, no matter what the subject, they expect their students to possess these skills and have a higher level of thinking. I think that if English was not a requirement in grade 12, many students would choose to not take it. This would mean that some students would have a higher level of thinking than others and possess better skills and so universities would struggle to make programs fitting and beneficial to all students. Basically, those who would choose not to take grade 12 English would feel like they are very behind when it comes to starting university; this would make the transition from high school and just overall school that much more difficult. So, yes In my opinion grade 12 English is a necessary prerequisite for university programs to ensure smooth sailing into the next chapter of your life.
